Imaginary friends

About

Imaginary Friend is a short film exploring childhood loneliness, particularly among only children. Inspired by China’s One-Child Policy (1982–2021), the project reflects on the emotional gaps left by growing up alone and how imaginary friends help children navigate isolation. Using light, shadow, and everyday objects, we create a dreamlike atmosphere where fantasy and reality intertwine. The film tells the story of a child and their shadow, illustrating how imaginary friends provide comfort but must eventually fade as one matures. Our work invites audiences to reflect on memory, nostalgia, and the transition from childhood imagination to adulthood. While rooted in a culturally specific context, Imaginary Friend resonates universally with those who have experienced solitude. Through simple yet evocative visuals, we aim to spark conversations about emotional attachment, personal growth, and the power of storytelling in shaping identity.
