Altars Beneath the Waves

About
This project conducts an in-depth study of existing marine ritual practices in Asia to explore the complex relationship between humans and the ocean. While these rituals appear to symbolise respect and reverence for the sea, in reality, they often reflect humanity’s attempt to harness the ocean’s mystical power to fulfil personal desires. Paradoxically, these rituals frequently contribute to marine pollution, creating a contradictory ecological cycle. This research not only examines the cultural and social significance of marine rituals but also aims to analyse the materials used in these ceremonies and their environmental impact, revealing the tension between spiritual beliefs and ecological responsibility.
This project seeks to leverage the recording properties of seashells to design new biodegradable marine ritual tools. These tools aim to preserve the cultural significance of rituals while reducing their negative environmental impact, ultimately achieving a harmonious balance between spiritual beliefs and marine conservation.
