PerkTrails: Using the online algorithm to promote healthier digital interaction

About
PerkTrails is an app that aims to use the same incentive and reward principle of online algorithms in a healthier way to promote better online and offline habits. We aim to explore how the same algorithm that contributes to unhealthy digital addiction can be used in a different manner, enabling users to be digital in a more positive way that focuses on their wellbeing.
- Theme: Being Digital – exploring healthier digital habits.
- Problem: Rising doomscrolling and passive digital consumption.
- Impact: Mental fatigue and disconnection from real life.
- Goal: Encourage joyful, creative offline engagement.
- Solution: A playful, reward–based system to shift behaviour.
- Users earn digital stickers/tokens for completing real–world activities.
- Activities include: walking, cooking, learning new skills, socialising, etc.
- Rewards build a personalised visual identity based on interests and values.
- Approach: Positive reinforcement, not restriction or guilt.
- Outcome: Inspire small, meaningful shifts toward a more balanced, mindful life
How the app aims to help:
This app is designed to help individuals move away from the habit of doomscrolling and embrace activities that are more fulfilling, relaxing, or meaningful. It achieves this through an incentive-driven, reward-based sticker system. Users can earn stickers within the app, which unlock tangible rewards such as discounts or deals related to their chosen activity. The app also serves as a resource hub, guiding users who are interested in starting a new hobby by showcasing local resources, tools, and communities that can support their interests. By providing a structured framework and accessible rewards, the app makes it easier and less intimidating for users to take the first steps toward a new hobby and sustain their engagement over time.
