Promoting Community Engagement Through Creative Expression——a Dragon Scale Fabric Book

The theme of our project is to promote community participation through creative expression. We are particularly concerned that the creative activities of some communities are often overlooked due to a lack of appropriate communication channels. We aim to use this booklet to promote Clapton Commons, share the community’s philosophy of caring, and highlight the activities and notable achievements of their organisation.
The book will include an introduction to the community, daily activities, and a photographic review of regular events.

The book, which is dragon scale bound and unfolds horizontally, presents the photos one by one as if they were a chronological line of memories. It serves as both an introduction to the community and a photo album of residents’ memories, and the beauty of this binding is that if people want to continue to add new memories, they can sew them directly onto the back of the last page.

We chose a light and soft material for the fabric; the whole book can be easily rolled up, making it easy to carry and easy to flip through. The lines on the side of the book will increase as residents flip through it, leaving traces, just like the traces left by the community residents.
