Stitching Tides of Resistance

Banners placed next to the Thames

About

Stitching Tides of Resistance is a socio-environmental protest project, criticising Thames Water and its mis-treatment of London’s water through eco-feminist embroidered banners displayed on the banks of the river.

Eco-feminism is a branch of feminism that explores the connections between women and nature, arguing that both are oppressed under patriarchal societal structures.

The inspiration behind creating embroidered banners came from Thalia Campbell and the women’s peace camp where they marched to Greenham Common in Newbury to protest NATO’s response to Soviet SS20 missiles and the storage of nuclear arms. They used beautifully crafted protest banners to translate their thoughts into powerful messages.

Our banner themes were inspired by news reports highlighting the Thames’ poor water quality — caused by Thames Water dumping billions of tons of sewage into the river and simply paying off the fines, which they can easily afford.

We hope these banners draw light on these issues and offer new insights into something the audience may not have known before.
