the veil of memory: illuminating care

About

Cae McLaughlin is an american artist working primarily with hand-carved wood. Their work uses visual narratives of american propaganda, which created an idealised version of settler-colonialist agrarian history. Drawing from James J. Gibson’s theory of visual affordances, moments within the work allow a viewer to attempt to understand how to use the object. Specific pieces either embody control by an oppressive body, while others ask to be taken up, empowering the disempowered.

Their work discusses re-emerging violence against transgender americans and queer minorities. Cae identifies as trans non-binary, while officially categorised as a biological woman. Their work examines the intersection of this identity.

They are currently pursuing an MA in Sculpture.
