About

Matilde’s painting practice centres on the manipulation of oil paint to play with a tension between an empirical descriptive tendency and a more open calligraphic quality, inspired by an eastern philosophy of thought where figuration and abstraction are inseparable.

Her work contains an awareness of clarifying, omitting, fading, bleeding, marking. She picks out curls, smudges, shapes, and signs, to reshape information. The result is something like a sediment or a grainy memory, burnt in but inaccurate, deceiving, reduced. The composition often ends up flat, resembling a woodblock print, and the earthy ground evokes a scroll painting.

Matilde works with oil paints, usually on stretched canvas or other fabrics, and paper. Her research involves finding more sustainable ways to work in oil, using materials that are kinder to the environment and health.
